Cultural Campfires Celebrate Diversity and Foster Connectivity

Pull up a chair and gather around the fire – Cultural Campfires are returning to Stony Plain! The free storytelling series will be hosted at Shikaoi Park on Thursday evenings throughout July and August.

Cultural Campfires is an annual series hosted by the Town of Stony Plain in partnership with local storytellers. The series features a story from a different culture each evening and aims to build community while fostering a deeper understanding and respect for cultural diversity. Previous years have seen the sharing of cultural stories and teachings from local Cree, Chinese, English, and German storytellers.

“Storytelling is an integral part of sharing values, experiences, and cultural teachings. We have had some great conversations around the campfire over the years, and I encourage residents to come out to listen and learn from local storytellers!” says Mayor William Choy.

“The campfires are designed not only to entertain, but to further build community understanding, acceptance, and compassion. Each campfire creates a space for community members to come out, meet new people, and explore different cultures through storytelling,” says Community Development Officer Deanna Butz.

The first Cultural Campfires will kick off the summer of storytelling on July 7 at 7PM. Admission is free, and all community members are welcome to attend. Seating at Shikaoi Park is limited and guests are advised to bring their own chair.
