Downtown Grand Opening Celebration
The Town of Stony Plain is excited to announce the grand opening of its new downtown. A community celebration featuring family-friendly activities, food trucks, and entertainment will take place on May 19 from 5PM to 8PM.
The evening of festivities will kick off with a blessing from Knowledge Keeper Phillip Campiou and ribbon cutting at the 50Street and 50 Avenue intersection. Guests will have the opportunity to discover downtown and win locally sourced goods with a postcard coming to resident mailboxes in the weeks ahead. The Discover Downtown card can also be picked up at pop-up booths on the day of the event.
“It has been incredibly exciting to watch our new downtown come to life during each stage of the Downtown Redevelopment Project. This celebration marks an important milestone for Stony Plain, and we are looking forward to sharing this moment with our community,” says Culture and Tourism Development Officer Chantelle Laberge. “This is an opportunity to come out and explore our new downtown!”
The five-year construction project involved significant infrastructure upgrades including a full replacement of water, sanitary, and storm pipes in the downtown core and the reconstruction of downtown roadways and sidewalks. The project further focused on improving accessibility and creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment by lessening crossing distances and incorporating drop drown curb ramps at handicap parking stalls.
“The new downtown creates an inviting atmosphere for local businesses to grow and connect with residents and visiting shoppers. Creating these community spaces where commerce can thrive and play a central role in the community is integral to economic growth and opportunity,” says Economic Development Officer Michelle Levasseur.
“Stony Plain has come a long way in the last 20 years. The redevelopment of downtown is a key step in growing our community into a more vibrant, self-sustaining urban municipality. This celebration will mark not only the completion of the construction, but also the creation of a new space where residents, business owners, and visitors can gather and explore the heart of our community,” says Mayor William Choy.
The completion of downtown marks a major milestone, and the Town of Stony Plain wants to take this opportunity to thank all local businesses and residents for their patience throughout the construction process. All community members are invited to come out for an evening of celebration as Stony Plain welcomes its new downtown core.
