Emergency Preparedness Week: Be Ready for Anything
Is your family prepared for an emergency? Learn how you can Be Ready for Anything by participating in Emergency Preparedness Week.
In the first 72 hours of a disaster, resources can be scarce, and it can be difficult to access help. Be Ready for Anything! Residents can take steps to prepare for emergencies by creating a 72-Hour Kit for their home and developing family emergency plans.
“It can seem like disasters only occur on the news, but this could not be further from the truth,” says Mayor William Choy. “Large catastrophic events occur regularly in our own backyards. Forest fires in Wood Buffalo and flooding in Southern Alberta remind us we are not immune from disasters. Much work has been done in Stony Plain to Prepare for, Respond to, and Recover from events that could impact our community.”
“We all have a role to play in disaster preparedness,” says Stony Plain Fire Chief Trevor Mistal. “These are simple, low-cost, and low-tech ways residents can ensure their families make it through that critical 72-hour period. Resilience is a by-product of preparedness; this will help our community if disaster strikes.”
The national campaign will run from May 1 to May 7. Community members are invited to join in on a fun, family-friendly Emergency Preparedness Day on Saturday, May 7 outside Town Office (4905 – 51 Avenue) from 10AM to 3PM. Activities and demonstrations will include:
- Meet and greet with Sparky the Fire Dog
- Photo opportunities with emergency responders and equipment
- Stony Plain Youth Centre BBQ and concession
- Emergency Preparedness education and information
