*** Original News Release May 5, 2023 ***
The Town of Stony Plain is now under a complete fire ban. The Stony Plain Fire Depart (SPFD) Chief issued the ban on Friday May 5, 2023 due to the heightened fire risk.
The fire ban prohibits open burning of any kind within municipal limits including; backyard fire pits, fireworks, and cooking stoves or BBQs that use solid fuels such as wood and briquettes. Only CSA approved propane BBQs, fire tables or similar devices equipped with a fuel shut off are allowed. Also, no new open burn permits will be issued.
Ensure smoking materials are disposed of in appropriate metal containers and kept wet. Do not throw cigarettes into backyard vegetation or from vehicles onto the roadway. Do not extinguish cigarettes into flowerpots, planters or organic material at any time.
Use extreme caution when operating an off-highway vehicle (OHV), cutting grass or doing any “hot work”, to avoid igniting tinder dry vegetation.
“As I have said before, we all have a role to play in disaster preparedness,” says Stony Plain Fire Chief Trevor Mistal. “There is a heightened fire risk with these incredible dry and windy conditions, and fires burning around the province. This complete fire ban is one more precaution the Town can take to keep our residents safe.”
“The Alberta Emergency Alert app is the best way to stay informed if an Alert is issued in Stony Plain. Be sure to have the App downloaded on your phone with notifications activated,” Chief Mistal goes on to say, “With the state of the Province and Emergency Preparedness Week approaching this weekend, this fire ban is a good reminder to make sure your family is prepared in the event of an emergency. In the first 72 hours of a disaster, resources can be scarce, and it can be difficult to access help. Be Ready for Anything! Residents can take steps to prepare for emergencies by creating a 72-Hour Kit for their home and developing family emergency plans.”
The fire ban will remain in effect until further notice. Please contact the Stony Plain Fire Department at 780-963-3551 if you have any questions or you can visit the SPFD page to learn more about the Fire Ban, Emergency Preparedness and to access safety resources. The City of Spruce Grove and Parkland County are also under a Fire Ban at this time.
A list of all Alberta Emergency Alerts in effect can be found on the Government of Alberta website and Stony Plain has been added to the Alberta Fire Bans website.
