KaRAR Performing Arts Presentation

Council received a presentation from KaRAR Performing Arts (KPA), highlighting the organization’s role in strengthening community, cultural vitality, and civic engagement in Stony Plain. As a community-based performing arts organization, KPA provides opportunities through productions, education, and volunteer involvement that help build confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Council heard about the growing demand for programs and KPA’s vision for the future as they continue to support residents and contribute to the social and cultural fabric of the region.

RCMP Quarterly Update 

Inspector Kevin McGillivary from the Parkland RCMP Detachment presented crime statistics for January and February, along with an overview of current policing initiatives and operations. The update highlighted trends and notable changes in Stony Plain, as well as ongoing programs and enforcement efforts in the community. Sergeant Colin Kuca of the Plain Clothes section also joined the presentation to provide additional insight into local operations.

Building Industry and Land Development Association Update

Representatives from the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) Edmonton Metro presented to Council on regional housing trends, growth pressures, and housing affordability. The presentation provided an overview of population growth, housing starts, and changing household needs across the region, and highlighted how these trends are impacting Stony Plain. Council also heard about the importance of housing diversity to support a range of residents, including first-time buyers, families, and downsizers.

Stony Plain Farmers’ Market Presentation

Last night, Stony Plain Farmers’ Market presented on its role in the community as a vibrant social and economic gathering space. As an approved Alberta market and long-standing non-profit organization, the market has been connecting residents, vendors, and local businesses for over 50 years. The presentation highlighted its importance in supporting local entrepreneurs, fostering relationships, and creating a welcoming space for the community to come together.

Housing Update Strategy Update

At last night’s Council meeting, Administration provided an update on the Town’s Housing Strategy. A range of housing options, including affordable and supportive housing, plays an important role in creating a healthy and inclusive community.

Adopted in 2022, the Housing Strategy is informed by demographic and housing data, along with input from residents, service providers, developers, and community organizations. It identifies current gaps and future needs, and is guided by three key goals focused on increasing housing diversity, improving access to market housing, and strengthening partnerships and capacity within the community.

Council accepted the Housing Strategy Update for information.

2026 Housing Accelerator Fund Progress Update 

Administration provided an update on the Town’s Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) grant, which supports initiatives to increase housing supply and improve development processes in Stony Plain.

Six of the seven initiatives are complete, with the final e-permitting system underway. Council also heard that approximately 300 new housing units have been created since the grant was approved in 2024, with continued progress needed to meet overall targets.
