Governance and Priorities Meeting Highlights for September 8, 2026

Member of Parliament Update 
At last nights meeting, Member of Parliament (MP) Dane Lloyd provided Council with an update on federal funding and support received by the Town of Stony Plain for key projects and services.

MP Dane Lloyd, who represents Stony Plain and serves as the Shadow Minister for Emergency Preparedness and Community Resilience, highlighted reports on the Building Communities Fund, Canada Day Grant, Canada Community Building Fund Capital, Canada Summer Jobs Grant and Housing Accelerator Fund. 

Council accepted the presentation for information.

RCMP Quarterly Update 
Council accepted the RCMP Quarterly Update for information. 
Superintendent Kevin McGilivary presented the crime statistics for Stony Plain for the months of January to July from 2022 to 2026 and spoke to the 2026 detachment operations. 

Stony Plain and Parkland Pioneer Museum Society 
Last night, the Stony Plain and Parkland County Pioneer Museum Society presented its 2026 operations report to Council, which accepted the presentation for information. 

The Pioneer Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve and share the stories and artifacts that define our community’s heritage. The museum ensures that the regions rich cultural legacy remains vibrant and alive for future generations. 

Artist Laureate Presentation 
Council accepted for information a presentation on the Artist Laureate Program. The Artist Laureate Program objective is to strengthen arts capacity in Stony Plain by supporting accomplished regional artists in advancing their practice while contributing to the community’s cultural vitality. 

Council recognized Lisa Matthias as Stony Plains 2026-2027 Artist Laureate. Based in Parkland County, Lisa is an artist and printmaker working primarily in woodcut and etching. 

2026 Second Quarter Report

The quarterly report provides comprehensive update on the Town of Stony Plain’s ongoing operations and serves as a benchmark to measure progress on the current budget, departmental work, and Council-approved projects.

Council accepted the 2026 Q2 Report for information. 

 
Recreation Facility Project Update
Council accepted the Recreation Facility Project Update as information.

The project is nearing 72% completion and continues to be on schedule and on budget. Since the project approval in 2024, many milestones have been achieved, most notably:
•    In 2024, groundbreaking and construction commencement in November 
•    In 2025, site preparation, servicing and major construction 
•    In 2026, continuation of major construction  

Next quarters projected activities include the completion of construction, public art installation and staff hiring.
