Umbach Storm Water Pond Construction Moves to Redesign
An overview of ongoing rehabilitation work at the Umbach Storm Water Management Facility was presented to Council. The storm pond was constructed in 2008 and concerns with ground movements along the pond’s perimeter were identified years later. An engineering review was completed in 2019 that identified poor soil conditions, ground water table elevations less than one metre below the surface, and pressurized groundwater.
Rehabilitation work began in May of 2022, but the project was briefly paused after the discovery of a snake hibernaculum resulted in a stop-work order from Alberta Environment and Parks. Shortly after major construction began, sand boils appeared along the pond bottom, creating uneven and untenable ground conditions for equipment. Construction was halted and the project has since entered a redesign phase.
Detailed designs of the redesign are expected in late September with construction planned from November to April. Finishing work is anticipated to be completed in June 2023. The Umbach Dog Park will remain open during construction and updates will be provided on the Stony Plain website.
