Healing from Crime and Trauma Community Expo Creates Opportunities for Healing and Connection
A new community expo dedicated to supporting those impacted by crime is coming to the Tri-Municipal Region. The Healing from Crime and Trauma Community Expo will take place at the Stony Plain and Parkland Pioneer Museum grounds on Tuesday, May 17 from 4PM to 8PM.
“Crime in the community impacts everyone. In 2021, 1,495 individuals in the Tri-Municipal Region were affected by crime. For each of these cases, the number of people impacted increases exponentially to include family, friends, neighbours, and service providers who support those affected,” states Corporal Zanbank, Parkland RCMP.
“Addressing crime in the region is critical to ensuring all residents feel safe and secure in their community. Together with our partners, we are excited to bring this new expo to the region and create new avenues for residents to connect with their peers and service providers,” says Mayor William Choy.
The expo is a joint initiative with the Town of Stony Plain, Parkland County, Parkland RCMP, Victim Services Society of Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and District, and WestView Health Centre. The outdoor event will include presentations from partners and a keynote speaker, information tables, therapy stations to highlight a variety of local therapy options, live entertainment, teddy bear give away, and refreshments.
“When one of us suffers, we all suffer. For victims of crime, healing takes time, support, and compassion from our entire community,” says Town of Stony Plain Community Development Officer Sharida Csillag.
“The Healing from Crime and Trauma Community Expo will raise awareness about the issues people affected by crime face and provide an opportunity for residents to learn more about supports available in their community,” says Jenelle Jean, Program Manager with the Victim Services Society of Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and District.
The expo aims to support community members impacted by crime and increase public safety. Topics covered throughout the evening may include sensitive subjects for some visitors. Onsite counseling will be available to support participants requiring assistance.
