Mâmawihitowin Day - July 25, 2026

WHEREAS the Lac Ste. Anne Métis Community Association (LSAMCA) is the representative organization of the Métis Aboriginal rights and interests of the historic and contemporary Lac Ste. Anne Métis community pursuant to the common-law test set out in Powley, which recognized Métis Aboriginal rights under section 35 of Canada’s Constitution Act, 1982; and

WHEREAS in September 2022, LSAMCA met the requirements of the Government of Alberta’s Metis Credible Assertion Process and Criteria (2020), meaning that LSAMCA is now consulted when Crown land management and resource development decisions may adversely impact the harvesting and traditional use activities of LSAMCA members; and

WHEREAS LSAMCA is committed to the cultural, educational, social, health and economic development of its members residing in the community’s traditional territory, inclusive of the lands and waters of west-central Alberta; and

WHEREAS in partnership with the Tri-Municipal Region (Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, and Parkland County), LSAMCA is the host of the Mâmawihitowin Summer Gathering held annually on the fourth Saturday in July. Mâmawihitowin is a Cree word meaning “a gathering of peoples.” At Mâmawihitowin, attendees young and old, from near and far, are invited to join in celebrating the rich history, heritage, and contributions of the Lac Ste. Anne Métis community. This annual event includes authentic cultural experiences, such as free warm homemade Bannock, an array of talented Indigenous musicians and dancers, an Indigenous artisan market, and more; and

WHEREAS the Mâmawihitowin annual gathering occurs on July 25, 2026, a day for all to gather and learn about the rich history, heritage and contributions of the Lac Ste. Anne Métis community and enhance understanding regarding Indigenous peoples more broadly; and

WHEREAS the Town of Stony Plain is committed to truth and reconciliation and, more specifically, advancing a relationship with LSAMCA based on the recognition of rights, respect, and friendship.

THEREFORE, I, Mayor William Choy of the Town of Stony Plain, do hereby proclaim July 25, 2026, as "Mâmawihitowin Day.”
