Métis Week - November 15 to 22, 2025

WHEREAS the Métis are one of three distinct Indigenous Peoples of Canada as recognized in Section 35 of the Constitution Act (1982); and

WHEREAS the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action directly references ways to address the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of Canadian reconciliation for Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Inuit, Métis); and

WHEREAS the Métis have a unique identity, culture, language, way of life, and historic self-government; and

WHEREAS in addition to recognizing Louis Riel Day on November 16, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta designates the week surrounding November 16 as “Métis Week”; and

WHEREAS “Métis Week” is devoted to commemorating the sacrifices of the Métis who continue to strive toward rights and recognition as a distinct nation; and

WHEREAS Stony Plain resides within the Lac Ste. Anne Métis District in the North Saskatchewan River Territory; and

WHEREAS the Town of Stony Plain acknowledges and respects the culture, history, and rights of the Métis people; and

THEREFORE, I, Mayor William Choy of Town of Stony Plain, do hereby proclaim November 15 - 22, 2025, as "Métis Week."
