National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People - May 5, 2024

WHEREAS National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People in Canada and the United States is May 5, 2024; and

WHEREAS this national day is also known as “Red Dress Day” as Métis artist, Jaime Black used red dresses to represent missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people and red dresses continue to be worn and displayed to honour and commemorate this day; and

WHEREAS the mishandling of investigations into missing and murdered Indigenous people has systemically and individually been a discriminatory practice which has enabled this epidemic to continue; and

WHEREAS surrounding Indigenous nations continue to experience loss of loved ones and continue to experience violence, exploitation and trauma at disproportionate levels; and

WHEREAS the Town of Stony Plain commits to demonstrate solidarity with the impacted families in Stony Plain and surrounding area; and in the spirit of reconciliation; and

THEREFORE, I, Mayor William Choy of the Town of Stony Plain, do hereby proclaim May 5, 2024 to be "National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People".
