National Indigenous History Month - June 1- 30, 2023
WHEREAS; in June, Canadians celebrate National Indigenous History Month to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada; and,
WHEREAS; it is an opportunity to recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities; and,
WHEREAS; National Indigenous History Month is a time for learning about, appreciating and acknowledging the contributions First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have made in shaping Canada; and,
WHEREAS; the Town of Stony Plain recognizes the importance and sacred nature of cultural ceremonies and celebrations that usually occur during this time; and,
WHEREAS; the Town of Stony Plain acknowledges it is situated in Treaty 6 territory, the traditional territory of the Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Beaver Cree, Saulteaux, Niisitapi (Blackfoot), Métis, and Nakota Sioux Peoples.
THEREFORE, I, Mayor William Choy, of the Town of Stony Plain, do hereby proclaim June 2023 as National Indigenous History Month.
