Provincial Referendum Signage in Stony Plain

STONY PLAIN, AB: On October 19, 2026, there will be a provincial referendum. The referendum is administered by Elections Alberta. 

Elections Alberta is responsible for the monitoring of messages on referendum advertising signs and ensuring signs and advertisers are following requirements. The Government of Alberta has issued general guidelines related to the size, characteristics, and placement of election signs. Stony Plain encourages third party advertisers to follow those guidelines if they wish to place signs in the Town. Inquiries or complaints regarding the content of referendum signage can be directed to Elections Alberta. 

The Town does not regulate the message or political position expressed on referendum signage but retains responsibility for public safety and municipal operations. Action may be considered where signage creates a demonstrable safety hazard, including blocking sightlines, interfering with traffic control devices, obstructing sidewalks and pathways, or disrupting municipal operations. Signs placed on private property require the permission of the property owner.

“The Town’s focus is on public safety and municipal operations,” says Ann Laing, General Manager of Corporate Services. “Where signage creates a safety concern, the Town will take appropriate action. Other questions about referendum advertising should be directed to Elections Alberta or the Government of Alberta.”
