Fire Services Bylaw Given First Reading

A first reading was given to the Fire Services Bylaw last night. The bylaw is designed to provide guidance and direction for fire-related risks and formalize the roles and responsibilities of the Stony Plain Fire Department. The Fire Services Bylaw will replace the existing Open Burning Bylaw, provide additional guidance, and enhance the overall safety of the community.

Second and third readings for the Fire Services Bylaw are scheduled for the June 28 Council Meeting.

Mayor’s Task Force on Community Resiliency Presents Final Report to Council

The Mayor’s Task Force on Community Resiliency has presented its final report. The committee was formed as a response to the global health pandemic with an aim to examine ways in which Stony Plain can strengthen its resiliency. Overall, the final report outlined 34 recommendations categorized under three themes: Social, Infrastructure, and Economic.

The findings from the Mayor’s Task Force on Community Resiliency report will be further analyzed with a presentation to Council slated for August.

Community and Social Development Roundtable Terms of Reference

Council has approved the Community and Social Development Roundtable Terms of Reference. Earlier this year, Council repealed bylaws related to Stony Plain Family and Community Support Services’ (FCSS) Strategic Management Board to begin the transition to Stony Plain FCSS operating within the Town governance structure.

The Community and Social Development Roundtable will work to maintain the spirit of public participation known to Stony Plain FCSS and allow for increased participation from the community. The Community and Social Development Roundtable will consist of up to 14 members comprised of both Stony Plain and Parkland County residents, representatives from social agencies, a Town Council member, and the General Manager of Community and Social Development.

Golf Course Operational Update

The Stony Plain Golf Course joined Council last night to present an update on course operations. The 2021 golf season had an early April start and looks to experience another successful season. The course was required to reduce capacity in May due to public health restrictions, but capacities returned to normal on June 4.

Public health guidelines remain in place at the course. Available services and programs, including the opening of the 3-hole Junior Course, will be expanded as the province moves into stage 3 of the reopening plan.

South Park Drive Land Development

The Town continues to plan and progress in creating more access and development in and around the WestView Health Centre.  In 2020, the extension of South Park Drive was placed in the Corporate Plan for design and construction in 2022-2023.  Following the in-camera discussion regarding Town land development opportunities to the east of the propose road extension, Council is seeking further planning and input from citizens and the Town Administration for future opportunities for residential and commercial development that could compliment the access improvements. The result from the discussion provided the following direction and next steps; that Council direct Administration to proceed with amendments to the South Business Park Area Structure Plan and Land Use Bylaw to transition the northern portion of Lot 8PUL Block 1 Plan 1224201 to R8 – High Density Residential District, P1 – Parks District, and Road Right of Way.
