Slower Speeds, Safer Streets: Residential speed limit reduction begins July 25
The Town of Stony Plain is reducing residential speed limits community-wide from 50 km/h to 40 km/h beginning July 25, 2026, as part of a safety-focused approach to neighbourhood roads.
The new 40 km/h limit will apply to local and collector roads in residential areas, except Glory Hill Road, from Highway 16A to the south cul-de-sac. Provincial highways (Highways 779, 628 and 16A), arterial roads, school zones and playground zones will remain unchanged.
Residential streets are shared spaces used by pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and other road users. Lower operating speeds give drivers more time to react, reduce stopping distances and lessen the likelihood and severity of collisions, helping lower the risk of serious injuries.
“Our neighbourhood streets are shared by everyone, whether you are walking, biking, driving or spending time in your community,” says Mayor William Choy. “This change reflects Council’s commitment to safer roads and supporting a high quality of life for residents across Stony Plain.”
The speed limit reduction was approved by Town Council on April 27, 2026, following a 2025 speed study of local and collector roads in Stony Plain. The study identified opportunities to enhance safety and support more consistent operating speeds in these areas.
“This change is focused on improving road safety,” says Infrastructure Planning Engineer Omar Kilani. “As the new speed limit takes effect, the Town is working to build awareness and help motorists understand where the reduced speed limit applies.”
“Our focus is on education and encouraging voluntary compliance,” says Sergeant Tiffany Anderson, Community Peace Officer Supervisor. “Drivers are asked to do their part and follow posted speed limits.”
Updated speed limit signage will be installed throughout residential areas.
Travel times on residential roads are expected to be minimally impacted.
