Start Spring Cleaning Just in Time for Treasure Hunt and Large Item Drop Off
Stony Plain, AB: Spring Cleaning? Just in time for the annual Treasure Hunt and Large Item Drop Off! Treasure Hunt is back May 1 to 3, and Large Item Drop Off will take place Sunday, May 3.
During Treasure Hunt, residents are encouraged to place unwanted, reusable items at the curb for others to take and repurpose. Residents are encouraged to remove any items not intended for giveaway from driveways, front yards, and other visible areas before April 30. Only items placed directly at the curb are considered part of the event. Do not enter yards, driveways, or doorsteps to collect items. If you're unsure whether something is part of the Treasure Hunt, leave it behind.
“Treasure Hunt is an interactive way for residents to participate in sustainability, explore Stony Plain, and do some spring cleaning,” says Mayor William Choy. “Set out your reusable items, explore your neighbourhoods, and help keep usable goods out of the landfill.”
Don’t Just Trash It! Residents are encouraged to donate any left-over usable items from Treasure Hunt to local organizations for repurposing. Items that aren’t claimed must be removed from the curb by the end of the day on May 3. Large items can be dropped off for free at the Public Works Yard (4505 50 Ave) during the Large Item Drop Off event on May 3, from 9 AM to 4 PM.
There isn’t a limit to the number of items that can be brought to Large Item Drop Off, but only eligible items will be accepted and residents must present proof of residency.
Eligible items:
- Large appliances
- Fridges
- Stoves
- Exercise equipment
- BBQs
- Furniture
- Wood pallets
- Bicycles
Ineligible items:
- Household garbage
- Construction waste
- Mattresses and box springs
- Hazardous materials
- Toilets and sinks
“Large Item Drop Off is a great opportunity for residents to responsibly dispose of bulky household items that can’t be picked up through regular waste collection,” says Darcy Carter, Manager of Parks and Roads. “Paired with Treasure Hunt, these events offer residents simple, practical ways to reduce waste, both through reusing items and disposing of them properly.”
