Stony Plain Cadets Honoured with Freedom of the Town

STONY PLAIN, AB: The Town of Stony Plain honoured the 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps by granting them Freedom of the Town on September 27. Freedom of the Town dates to medieval times and is one of the highest civic honours a municipality can bestow. 

The Corps has served the community for the past 40 years, fostering leadership, citizenship, and discipline among generations of young Cadets. The Freedom of the Town ceremony grants the Corps the symbolic right to march through the Town and is a mark of distinction for the group. 

“The 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps have been dedicated to public service and leadership in our community for 40 years,” says Mayor William Choy. “We are proud to bestow this great honour on the group, and look forward to continuing our strong relationship with the Sea Cadets for many years to come.”

The 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps consists of members aged 12-18 who meet weekly in Stony Plain. The program focuses on building leadership skills, confidence, and teamwork while gaining concrete skills in sailing, marksmanship, and drill commands.
