Stony Plain Celebrates Grand Opening of New Cemetery

STONY PLAIN, AB: The Town of Stony Plain is proud to announce the grand opening of the Stony Plain Cemetery. This important community project provides a non-denominational resting place where families can honour and remember loved ones.

The Stony Plain Cemetery offers a range of burial and memorial options to meet diverse needs and preferences. These include traditional and cremation burial plots, columbarium niches, family columbaria, green burials, a scattering garden, and a dedicated Field of Honour for veterans.

The Cemetery also features Perpetual, a public artwork by Hooman Mehdizadehjafari. Inspired by the infinity symbol, the sculpture reflects themes of continuity, remembrance, and the enduring legacy of those who have passed.

“The opening of the Cemetery is a meaningful milestone for Stony Plain,” says Mayor William Choy. “It will carry forward the stories and connections that have shaped the community and become part of that story itself as a place that will serve families for many years to come.” 

“The Cemetery has been a significant project for the Town for many years, shaped through careful planning, thoughtful design, and dedicated construction efforts,” says Chief Administrative Officer Tom Goulden. “To provide a place of remembrance for our community is something we take great pride in and will continue to value for years to come.”

Columbarium niches are available for interment and remaining burial options will open in tiers. Cemetery Services staff are available to support residents through the purchasing process and provide information on available options and timelines.
