Stony Plain Celebrates Local Olympian Gold Medalist Stephanie Labbé

Stony Plain’s own Stephanie Labbé is bringing home the gold!

Stephanie Labbé, goalkeeper for the Canadian Women’s Soccer team, helped Canada claim the gold medal in a tense penalty kick shootout against Sweden on day 14 of the Tokyo Olympics. The final ended 1-1 and ultimately headed to penalty kicks where Labbé’s goalkeeping helped Canada secure the gold medal.

Labbé is part of the first Canadian women’s soccer team to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Her recent gold medal win will be the second Olympic medal for Labbé who received bronze in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“It’s incredible not only watching a local athlete on the big screen, but participating in the Olympics no less. And then bringing home gold!” says Mayor William Choy. “I think I speak for our community when I say we are incredibly proud of Stephanie’s accomplishments. Congratulations!”

Town Manager Tom Goulden adds, “We are proud of all Canadian Olympians and celebrate with them! They are all hometown heroes in our hearts and we are excited for all communities across Canada.”

Canada brought home a total of 24 medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
