Stony Plain Fire Department Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week
STONY PLAIN, AB: The Stony Plain Fire Department (SPFD) is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™)—to highlight this year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home™.” The initiative aims to raise awareness about the safe purchase, use, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries to reduce fire risks in households.
Lithium-ion batteries power many household electronics, from smartphones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes, and toys. While convenient, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if they are damaged or improperly handled. The Stony Plain Fire Department encourages all residents to actively support the 2025 FPW theme.
“Lithium-ion batteries may not be the first thing people think of when it comes to fire hazards, but they should absolutely be considered,” says Chief Nesbitt. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is a great way to educate everyone about this and other fire risks in your homes, and how to mitigate them.”
Mayor William Choy added, “Fire Prevention Week is an important opportunity to remind our community about fire hazards, connect residents with our fire department, and reinforce safety practices. I encourage everyone to check their smoke alarms and participate in the initiatives led by our dedicated Fire Department.”
Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips and Guidelines:
• When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, take time to research it. Look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab on the packaging and product, which means that it meets established safety standards
• Many products sold online and in stores may not meet safety standards and could increase the risk of fire
• If you need a new charger, buy one from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved
• Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t charge it under a pillow, on a bed, or on a couch
• Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged
• Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could catch fire
