Stony Plain Fire Department Opens Recruitment for Casual Firefighters

STONY PLAIN, AB: Do you have what it takes to serve your community? The Stony Plain Fire Department is now accepting applications for new Casual Firefighters. This annual recruitment drive is an opportunity for residents to join a close-knit team committed to protecting the safety and well-being of Stony Plain and surrounding areas.

Applications are open until October 3, 2025, and the Fire Department is calling on individuals from all walks of life to consider this unique and rewarding role. No prior experience is required, new recruits receive 240 to 260 hours of paid training in their first year, along with ongoing Monday evening sessions. Training is designed to meet national certification standards, providing firefighters with valuable, college-equivalent credentials.

To give potential applicants a clear picture of the role, the Fire Department is hosting a Recruitment Information Night on September 17, 2025 at the Fire Hall. Attendees will tour the station, meet current firefighters, and learn more about the training, responsibilities, and time commitment required.

“Firefighting is more than just responding to emergencies, it’s about teamwork, community, and service,” says Chief Nesbitt. “We want people to come to the Information Night with their questions and see firsthand what it means to be a Casual Firefighter. It’s a role that challenges you, but it also rewards you in ways that few jobs can.”

Mayor William Choy adds, “The Stony Plain Fire Department is built on dedication and community spirit. By joining as a Casual Firefighter, residents have a chance to make a lasting difference for their neighbours while gaining nationally recognized training and skills.”

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, hold a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license, and reside in Stony Plain. Orientation is planned for December, with the recruit training program scheduled on select Monday evenings and weekends from January through September 2026.
