Stony Plain Honours National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30

STONY PLAIN, AB: The Town of Stony Plain will observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, from 10 AM to 12 PM in Heritage Park. This free event will feature a territorial welcome, reflections shared by an Elder and Indigenous artist Lance Cardinal, tea and Bannock, and live music by the Stirling John Band. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange shirts.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed annually on September 30, and is dedicated to honouring Residential School Survivors, their families, and communities, and to recognize the lasting impacts of Canada’s Residential School system. Together for Reconciliation in Stony Plain is a public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing enduring impacts of residential schools.

“I encourage everyone to join us in attending our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event,” says Mayor William Choy. “This event is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and come together as a community and create meaningful opportunities for healing and learning.”

“Reconciliation is an ongoing commitment we all make to building a more inclusive community,” says Deanna Butz, Community Development Officer. “Together for Reconciliation is about listening and learning from each other, building relationships and honouring those affected by residential schools.”
