Stony Plain Looks to Establish Naming Registry Honouring Local Icons

Are you a friend or family member of someone who has made a significant impact in Stony Plain? Perhaps that person is you! The Town is creating a list of names honouring local icons to be used in naming practices and is calling on the community for confirmations and nominations.

The Significant Names Registry will provide the Town with potential naming options for municipal roads, buildings, parks, and trails. The list of names will reflect individuals who have made significant contributions to the town, its history, or development. As the first draft of the registry is currently under review, the Town is requesting confirmation from the individuals or families of the individuals listed in the registry to obtain support to use the name throughout the community. The Town is also accepting nominations for additional names to be considered for inclusion on the list.

“Throughout our community’s history, there have been many individuals and families who have supported the growth and prosperity of Stony Plain. The new registry is a great opportunity to honour their legacy and carry their names with us into the future,” says Mayor William Choy.

To be included on the Significant Names Registry, the nominee is required to fit at least one of the following criteria:

  • Is/was an original inhabitant, pioneer, or settler from Stony Plain.
  • Is/was a person who demonstrates excellence, courage, or exceptional dedication to service in ways that bring special credit to Stony Plain, the province, the country, or internationally.
  • Is/was a person who volunteers and gives extraordinary help or care to individuals, families, or groups, or supports community services and humanitarian causes.
  • Is/was a person who risks their life to save or protect others.
  • Is/was a person who achieves a deed or activity performed in an outstanding professional manner or of an uncommonly high standard that brings considerable benefit or honour Stony Plain, the province, the country, or internationally.

Please be advised consent is required from the individual or family of the individual being nominated for the registry. Confirmation of names on the first draft and nominations for additions can be submitted through the online survey on the Stony Plain website until February 14, 2023.
