Stony Plain Municipal Cemetery Preparing for 2026 Opening

STONY PLAIN, AB: The Town of Stony Plain continues to make steady progress toward opening its non-denominational municipal cemetery in 2026, with construction nearing completion and operational planning well underway. An update on the project was provided at the February 23 Council meeting, outlining key milestones achieved to date and the phased approach to opening later this year. You can watch the meeting recording on the Town’s official YouTube channel.

The cemetery will open in phases throughout 2026 to ensure landscaping is properly established and operational supports are fully in place. Beginning in May, columbarium niches, including those in the dedicated Veteran’s area and spaces for family columbaria will be available. The scattering garden is anticipated to open in July once installation is complete. Burial plots, including traditional, green burial, and cremation plots, are expected to become available for interments in September following sufficient turf establishment to provide ground stability and preserve site aesthetics.

“The municipal cemetery is an important long-term investment in our community,” says Mayor William Choy. “This space has been thoughtfully designed to provide a peaceful, dignified place of remembrance that will serve residents and families for generations.”

“A thoughtful, phased approach gives the landscaping time to properly establish and allows us to finalize operational procedures,” says Paul Simons, Manager of Infrastructure Operations. “Completing the remaining groundwork and site preparation will help ensure the cemetery opens in a respectful and fully prepared manner.”

The cemetery will offer a range of interment options designed to serve diverse community needs, including traditional monument burials, flat marker burials, green burial options, a columbarium, family columbaria, a dedicated Veteran’s area, and a scattering garden. The Town will continue to share updates as key milestones approach.
