Stony Plain Public Library Honoured with 2025 Award of Creative Excellence
STONY PLAIN, AB: The Stony Plain Public Library (SPPL) has been awarded the Town of Stony Plain’s Award of Creative Excellence for its outstanding contributions to cultural initiatives, social cohesion, community identity, and creative economic sustainability. The award was presented during the Greater Parkland Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Awards of Distinction held last evening.
Celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2025, SPPL continues to build on its legacy as Stony Plain’s oldest cultural institution. This year, the library introduced innovative programs such as live jam sessions and ukulele lessons in partnership with the Blueberry Music Festival and the Town of Stony Plain. It also launched Blueberry Bonus Days to encourage festival-goers to support local businesses and organized a downtown treasure hunt as part of its Summer Reading Program. The library's extended hours during special events, such as Canada Day and Midsummer Thursdays, further demonstrated its dedication to supporting local businesses and enhancing downtown vibrancy.
“The Stony Plain Public Library has been a staple in Stony Plain for decades,” says Mayor William Choy. “SPPL has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of our community. They make Stony Plain better, and I’m very proud to see them recognized with this honour.”
The library's efforts to strengthen social and cultural cohesion include hosting cultural events like the local Author Fair, welcoming newcomers in collaboration with regional libraries, and training staff as Culture and Tourism Ambassadors to help connect residents and visitors with local businesses and events. With more than 2000 children participating in its record-breaking Summer Reading Program, SPPL continues to reflect the town's growth and its appeal to young families. The library's alignment with the Town’s 2025-2028 Strategic Plan and its collaborative partnerships have solidified its position as a cornerstone of Stony Plain's cultural and economic landscape.
“The Stony Plain Public Library has truly embodied the spirit of the Award of Creative Excellence,” says Culture and Tourism Development Officer Chantelle Laberge. “Through creativity and collaboration, SPPL has found innovative ways to engage residents, support local businesses, and strengthen community connections. Their programs highlight how cultural partnerships can enhance Stony Plain’s vibrancy and sense of place.”
