Stony Plain Q1 Residential Permit Values Exceed $10 Million

Stony Plain housing starts point toward strong growth for the municipality in 2022.

First quarter residential construction comprised of 62 housing starts, including 13 single-detached dwellings and 49 high-density dwellings with a combined estimated construction value of $13.1 million. Compared to the first quarter of 2021, housing starts are down 3%; however, residential permit values are up.

“High-density dwellings represent an important investment in the community, offer more affordable housing options for residents, and increase total permit values. All residential permit values are up 70% from last year, equating to over 10.6 million dollars,” Mayor William Choy says. “Stony Plain is committed to working with our partners, neighbours, and stakeholders to grow our community.”

There were 38 permits issued for alterations and additions in the first quarter, including 25 residential improvements, 9 commercial improvements, and 4 industrial improvements with a combined estimated construction value of $2 million. Although the volume of residential improvements was down from the first quarter of 2021, the value increased by 30%.

There were 34 other permits issued, including 14 signs, 11 home occupations, and 9 moves/demolitions with a combined estimated construction value of $877 thousand.
