Stony Plain receives federal support to revitalize downtown core

A federal investment of $500,000 has supported the Town of Stony Plain to revitalize its downtown core through enhancements that are improving accessibility for pedestrians while also providing spaces for cultural events.

“The completion of our new downtown has been a major milestone for Stony Plain. From the upgraded underground utilities to the pedestrian-friendly layout, the new space is an inviting environment for residents, visitors, and prospective business owners. Having access to funding that supports both the residents of today and those of tomorrow is vital for a growing community. We are incredibly grateful to be the recipient of these funds.”

- Mayor William Choy

The federal funding is being provided through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF), which is administered in Alberta by PrairiesCan. The funding is supporting the Town’s Downtown Redevelopment project—a five-year, $15.8 million revitalization initiative.

“Communities across Canada treasure their main streets and downtown cores. They are critical for local businesses, tourism, and a great place to come together with family and friends. Through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund our government is supporting the Town of Stony Plain’s work in revitalizing its city centre to support a more accessible, enjoyable and pedestrian-friendly experience for people to gather, shop locally and generate greater economic activity.”

The Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister for PrairiesCan

“Main streets and downtowns across Alberta bring people together and support countless small businesses. Today’s investment will help Stony Plain to recover post-pandemic by creating more jobs and opportunities for residents and visitors to benefit from the local businesses and attractions that are at the heart of this community.”

The Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance

Stony Plain’s downtown Redevelopment has been supported by a combination of grants and reserves. The scope of work made possible through the CCRF funding has included underground infrastructure replacements and upgrades, re-paving of roadways and sidewalks, pedestrian safety upgrades, and landscaping.
