Stony Plain’s Q2 Permit Values Exceed $11 Million

Stony Plain’s second quarter permit statistics indicate an increase in medium-density dwellings.

Second quarter residential construction comprised of a total of 23 housing starts, including 14 single detached dwellings, two semi-detached dwellings, and seven medium-density dwellings (condominiums) with a combined estimated construction value of $9.6 million. Stony Plain’s residential permit values to date total $22.7 million. Compared to the second quarter of 2021, housing starts are down 30%.

There were no commercial or industrial permits issued in the second quarter. One other permit was issued for Stony Plain’s new francophone school, the Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord, with an estimated construction value of $2.0 million. There were 54 permits issued for alterations and additions in the second quarter including 47 residential improvements, five commercial improvements, and two industrial improvements with a combined estimated construction value of $2.6 million.

“Permit volumes in Q2 were slightly lower in 2022 compared to recent years, while the overall value of permits was higher than previous years recorded. The location of permits issued in Q2 reflects areas in existing neighbourhoods that are still developing and new areas that have recently been subdivided in alignment with a corresponding area structure plan,” says Miles Dibble, Manager of Planning. “Over the last several years, external factors have influenced planning and development trends making it difficult to project future growth. The Town will continue to monitor development statistics throughout the remainder of 2022 to report on annual trends once data is collected for the third and fourth quarters.”

“Growth fluctuates, it is never consistent, and with the inflation rate being very high right now, it is terrific to see that permit values in 2022 are competitive compared to recent years. It demonstrates a resilient local economy and a strong network of builders and developers in Stony Plain,” says Economic Development Officer Michelle Levasseur.
