Stony Plain's 2023 Development Highlights
Stony Plain issued 381 building and development permits in 2023, representing a 5% increase over the previous year (363) and demonstrating the industry’s resilience and adaptability in navigating evolving market conditions.
1 permit was issued for new commercial development and 5 for new industrial projects, a slight decrease compared to 2022.
74 new residential dwelling permits were issued, reflecting a 35% drop compared to 2022. 189 permits were issued for improvements, a 23% increase from 2022 (154).
Despite the decrease in the total value of permits issued in 2023, totalling approximately $40.5 million compared to $53.3 million in 2022, Stony Plain maintained its position as a hub for economic activity in the region.
“Stony Plain’s building and development activity this past year was generally quite positive despite the hurdles builders and developers have had to overcome across Canada,” says Planning and Development Manager Miles Dibble. “With the first quarter of 2024 underway, I’m optimistic that the year ahead will surpass 2023’s activity, as several major projects are already taking shape.”
“Stony Plain attracted several new businesses in 2023, including SwimWahoo, Chopped Leaf, and English Bay Blending and Fine Chocolates, to name a few,” says Economic Development Officer Michelle Levasseur. “We’re seeing a lot of activity in Stony Plain’s North Business Park, which we know is a catalyst for increased residential, commercial, and industrial development.”
“The Town is anticipating grant funding decisions for various projects which will drastically change Stony Plain’s landscape in the years to come, enhancing the community’s quality of life and creating new opportunities for current and prospective residents,” says Mayor William Choy. “Great things are on Stony Plain’s horizon.”
