Town Issues Alberta Emergency Alert and Urges Immediate Reduction in Water Use

June 21, 2026- 7:30 PM

The Town of Stony Plain has issued a non-broadcast intrusive Alberta Emergency Alert and is asking all residents and businesses to immediately reduce non-essential water use following significant rainfall over the past 24 hours.

Heavy rainfall has pushed the Town's wastewater system to capacity, increasing the risk of sewer backups and localized flooding. The Town has received reports of sewer backups affecting individual homes and businesses.

While there are currently no reports of widespread flooding, reducing water use will help lessen pressure on the wastewater system and reduce the risk of additional impacts.

To help protect the wastewater system, residents are asked to avoid washing dishes, doing laundry, showering, and other unnecessary water consumption. Toilet flushing should be limited to essential use only. Businesses are also being asked to reduce water usage and wastewater discharge wherever possible.

"The Alberta Emergency Alert was issued to ensure residents and businesses are aware of the situation and the immediate actions needed to help reduce pressure on our wastewater system," said Paul Simons, Manager of Civic and Municipal Operations. "We are asking everyone to reduce non-essential water use wherever possible. By working together, we can help reduce the risk of additional sewer backups and localized flooding."

Residents are also advised to stay away from creeks, stormwater ponds, and other areas affected by high water levels.

At this time, all roads, sidewalks, and pathways in Stony Plain remain open.

The Town will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as more information becomes available.
