Town Presents Annual Matthew Claus Award to Community Peace Officer, Veronica Wenzel

STONY PLAIN, AB: The 2025 Matthew Claus Award has been awarded to Veronica Wenzel, Community Peace Officer at the Town of Stony Plain. The award was presented at the Town’s annual Long Service Awards and Recognition Banquet.

Veronica is known for her ability to build meaningful relationships with both coworkers and the public. Whether it is sharing a friendly chat with colleagues or the Mayor outside the Town Hall, or dropping off coffee or homemade treats to brighten someone’s day, her thoughtful gestures foster connection and community. She willingly takes on additional responsibilities to support her team, always asking, “How can I help?” Her instinct to uplift others and break down silos across departments strengthens collaboration and unity throughout the organization.

Her commitment to mentoring new staff, embracing new skills, and easing the workload of her colleagues demonstrates her unwavering dedication to the Town. Her compassion extends well beyond the workplace. Whether she is helping an elderly resident cross Main Street, purchasing winter boots for someone in need, or offering words of comfort to a resident experiencing loss, Veronica embodies empathy and public service in every action.

“Veronica’s compassion, humility, and commitment to community perfectly reflect the spirit of the Matthew Claus Award,” says Town Manager Tom Goulden. “She leads by example, building trust and kindness into every interaction. Veronica does not just wear the uniform, she represents what it truly means to serve, with heart, integrity, and pride. Her leadership and warmth make a lasting difference within our organization and throughout the community.”

Veronica serves on the Steering Committee for the Stony Plain Youth Network, collaborates with not-for-profit organizations such as MADD, Legacy Place, and I’veGotYourBack911, and participates in events like the Toys for Tickets shopping spree and Kinsmen Hampers. Her creativity and initiative have also advanced the Town’s Enforcement Services through new programs and professional development opportunities. From championing tactical first aid and mental wellness training to expanding educational initiatives like the Option 4 program, Veronica’s forward-thinking approach continues to enhance public safety and community trust.

Matthew Claus, former Manager of Planning for the Town of Stony Plain, passed away on April 19, 2016. Matthew took pride in his work, treated his co-workers with respect, and believed in public service. The Town of Stony Plain founded the Matthew Claus Award to honour his legacy. The award is presented annually to an employee who demonstrates the qualities Matthew Claus was known and respected for.
