Town-wide Low Water Pressure Due to Suspected Watermain Break
*******UPDATE February 9, 2026 @ 1:00 PM*******
The Town of Stony Plain has confirmed the cause of today’s low water pressure.
At approximately 11:15 AM, crews working on a project at the intersection of Crystal Drive and Golf Course Road struck a Town watermain. This resulted in reduced water pressure, particularly in the north end of town. There was no complete loss of pressure and there are no water quality concerns.
Additional pumps have been activated to maintain pressure while Utilities crews work to isolate the break. The watermain was successfully isolated at approximately 12:30 PM, and water pressure should now be returning to normal across the community.
Doug Fraser, Supervisor of Utilities and Environment says, “the only remaining area affected is the Crystal Carwash compound, where hydrants and any connected private water services in the compound are currently without service.” Fraser goes on to say, “following large water flows, some residents may notice cloudy or discoloured water. This is temporary and can be resolved by running the cold water tap in a bathtub until the water runs clear and cold.”
*******ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE February 9, 12:25 PM*******
Stony Plain, AB: The Town of Stony Plain is responding to reports of low water pressure affecting all areas of the community.
At approximately 11:20 AM, Public Works began receiving calls from residents across town reporting reduced water pressure. Initial investigation suggests a watermain near Crystal Drive may have been damaged. Backup pumps are currently operating to maintain service while the Town’s Utilities crew works to investigate and isolate the issue.
The suspected damage was reported by a private contractor who is not working on behalf of the Town of Stony Plain.
“There is no estimated timeframe for restoration right now,” said Doug Fraser, Supervisor of Utilities and Environment. “Our crews are on the scene and working to isolate the affected watermain as safely and quickly as possible while maintaining service through backup systems.”
The Town appreciate residents who have called to report the issue. At this time, crews are on site and additional phone calls are not required unless there is an urgent matter. This helps our teams focus on resolving the issue as quickly as possible. Alternatively, please use the Report It form.
Residents may continue to experience low water pressure until repairs are complete. Updates on Utilities and Water will be shared as more information becomes available.
