Walk with Elders for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

A community walk is coming to Stony Plain in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Residents are invited to dawn their orange shirts and join their community for a walk and talk with Elders.

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day recognizes the impacts of the residential school system and honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

“The walk and talk is an opportunity for residents to come out, show their support, and learn about the importance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation,” says Mayor William Choy. “Having the opportunity to listen to and learn from Elders is such an important part of a community’s reconciliation journey. We are grateful to local Elders and Knowledge Keepers who are at the forefront of relationship building and reconciliation in the region.”

“Coming together to commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a powerful moment for a community. This is a day that comes with a lot of emotions and grief for many. By understanding the impacts of residential schools, we are also given an opportunity to build relationships, share knowledge and resources, and create a stronger, more inclusive community,” says Community Development Officer Deanna Butz.

All community members are invited to join the Walk with Elders event taking place in downtown Stony Plain on September 30. The walk will begin at 10AM at the Stony Plain Community Centre (5008 51 Avenue) and venture through the downtown area for approximately one hour. Participants are welcome to enjoy complimentary tea and bannock at the Family Connection Centre (5600 50 Street) following the walk.
