We’re Bringing Bison Back! Green Initiative Brings Bison to Rotary Park
STONY PLAIN, AB: Bring out your rubber boots! Stony Plain will be Bringing Bison to the Plain in its latest green initiative.
Don’t be surprised to see majestic, woolly beasts in Rotary Park over the summer months. Town Council has approved a proposal to bring in 20 bison for the months of June through August as an environmentally friendly way of maintaining the lawn in Rotary Park.
“This is a wonderful way for residents to learn about bison which once freely roamed these lands,” says Mayor William Choy. “In addition, they provide a new spin on grasscycling by both clipping the grass and providing ample fertilizer. We are so happy to be a part of this initiative!”
Town Manager Tom Goulden says, “Fort Saskatchewan has been successfully bringing in sheep for the past few years. Why not kick it up a notch?”
The bison will be arriving on June 1st. Please ensure to keep your dogs on a leash during this time and make your children aware of the importance of giving the bison some extra space.
The Town of Stony Plain is in the process of hiring a new Bison Sanitation Engineer. In the meantime, extra-large poop bags will be available in park dispensers.
