2021 Federal Census Data Details Population Growth in Stony Plain
NOVEMBER 30, 2022 UPDATE
A new federal census report ranks Canada as first in the G7 for the share of adults aged 25 to 64 with a college or university credential (57.5 per cent of the census population). Recent immigrants made up nearly half of the growth in the amount of Canadians with a bachelor's degree or higher.
Over two-thirds of apprenticeship certificates in 2021 were in contruction trades (carpenters, electricians, and plumbers), mechanic and repair technologies, and welding; however, the total number of working-age people with apprenticeships declined in mechanic and repair technologies (-7.8 per cent) and precision production (-10.0 per cent) from 2016 to 2021. In Alberta, the number of people with an apprenticeship certificate in the construction sector fell by 3.5 per cent.

OCTOBER 28, 2022 UPDATE
Additional federal census data released by the Government of Canada indicates that immigrants make up the largest share of the population in over 150 years and continue to shape who we are as Canadians.
In 2021, almost one-quarter (23 per cent) of the population was made up of immigrants to Canada. 4.4 per cent of these recent immigrants have settled in small urban areas.

JULY 13, 2022 UPDATE
The latest federal census data has been released and provides insight into family characteristics and income.
Married or common-law households make up the largest segment of census families within Stony Plain. The average family size reported is 2.9 people, with the average number of children (in families with children reported) is 1.8.
The median total income for individuals over the age of 15 is $44,800 and $40,400 after-tax. For households, the median total income is $92,000 and after-tax is $79,500.

APRIL 27, 2022 UPDATE
New census data provides a closer look at demographics and housing in Stony Plain.
Stony Plain’s population has experienced growth across age groups between 2016 and 2021, the largest growth seen in the 65 years and older age group. The average resident age in Stony Plain has increased from 38.9 to 41.5.
Key age demographic figures for Stony Plain include:
- 0 to 14 years age group grew by 6 per cent and represent 19 per cent of the total population
- 15 to 64 years age group grew by 4 per cent and represent 60.6 per cent of the total population
- 65 years and older age group grew by 43 per cent and represent 20.3 per cent of the total population
Household size has remained constant with only a minor decrease from 2.5 to 2.4, and total occupied private dwellings increased by 13.9 per cent.

2021 Federal Census Data Details Population Growth in Stony Plain
Federal census numbers are in! The Town of Stony Plain is officially home to 17,993 people, a 4.7 per cent population increase since the 2016 census.
“We are excited to see Stony Plain’s population growth trend continue. Having reliable census data is critical for the Town and allows us to understand the rate at which our community is expanding so we can better prepare for an ever-growing resident population. This data will assist with implementing and monitoring various initiatives, from economic development to social programming,” says Town Manager Tom Goulden.
“Our community continues to experience population growth, and each year we look forward to welcoming new residents to Stony Plain. We are proud of our growing community!” says Mayor William Choy. “The updated census numbers are not only exciting as evidence of our growth but are further critical figures for developing our municipal profile and attracting new opportunities.”
Key figures from the census include:
- An enumerated population change of 4.7 per cent from 2016
- A 7.4 per cent increase in occupied private dwellings from 2016
- A population density of 507.6 people per square kilometre
