Municipal Development Plan and Old Town Community Plan Update Accepted for Information

Council accepted the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Old Town Community Plan (OTCP) update for information. Administration has begun a two-year, three-part project to update the Town’s key long-range planning documents and support future implementation work in Old Town, with a focus on opportunities in Old Town South.

The MDP update is currently underway, with significant community engagement planned for late spring. The remaining project phases, including the OTCP update and implementation planning, will continue through 2026 and 2027 to help guide future growth, land use, infrastructure, and development decisions in alignment with community priorities.

2026 First Quarter Report Presented

The quarterly report provides a comprehensive update on the Town of Stony Plain’s ongoing operations and serves as a benchmark to measure progress on the current budget, departmental work, and Council-approved projects.

Council accepted the 2026 Q1 Report for information.

Community Recreation Facility Project Update

Construction of the first phase of the Recreation Facility, a dry sport and six-sheet curling facility, began in November 2024 following Council’s approval of the $41.65 million project in April 2024.

The project is nearly 60% complete and remains on schedule and on budget, with completion expected in Q4 2026. Recent work includes progress on the roof, interior finishing, curling ice slab preparation, running track frame, and mechanical systems. Upcoming work will focus on parking lot preparation and paving, building exterior finishes, interior finishes, ice plant installation, and staffing for the new facility.

Active Transportation Strategy Update Accepted for Information

Active transportation includes human-powered ways of moving around the community, such as walking, cycling, rolling, and scootering, and supports health, environmental, safety, social, and economic benefits.
The Town’s Active Transportation Strategy, developed in 2020, guides improvements to active transportation infrastructure and future initiatives. The strategy focuses on infrastructure design, connectivity, and promotion to support a safer, more connected, and accessible active transportation network in Stony Plain. 

At last night’s meeting, Council accepted the Active Transportation Strategy update for information.
