Regular Council Meeting Highlights for April 25, 2022

Property Taxation Bylaw Sets Rates for 2022

First reading has been given to the Property Taxation Bylaw (Bylaw 2658/T AX/22). The bylaw authorizes the rates of taxation to be levied against property within Stony Plain for the 2022 taxation year.

A Tax Rate Split of 1.26 was used in calculating the 2022 tax bylaw, moving the rate towards a split of 1.35:1 to align Stony Plain with the average of urban municipalities of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (EMRB). The move from the 1.22 split implemented in 2021 to 1.26 for 2022 is based on equal annual increments and will continue to be staged up to the 2024 taxation year when the desired tax rate split will be met.

The Property Taxation Bylaw will be posted to the Stony Plain website.

Stony Plain Welcomes its New Downtown

With the Downtown Redevelopment project wrapping up, a report outlining the scope of work and next steps has been presented to Council. As of December 2021, the five-year construction project cost $15,791,211 with the budget covering the replacement of underground infrastructure, installation of a roundabout, repaving of roadways and installation of sidewalks, and landscape features.

An additional $90,000 is required to complete the project in 2022, which includes installing planters, addressing minor deficiencies, and final engineering costs. A transfer of $90,000 from the Roads Capital Reserve has been approved to cover the remaining work.

In recognition of the project’s completion, a community event is being hosted on May 19. The celebration will include a ceremonial ribbon cutting, free activities, food trucks, and live entertainment.
