Stony Plain Breaks Ground on New Pickleball and Tennis Courts in Old Town South
STONY PLAIN, AB: The Town of Stony Plain is celebrating the start of construction on new outdoor pickleball and tennis courts in Old Town South. Council and Administration gathered this afternoon for a sod-turning ceremony to officially mark the beginning of the project.
The courts, located in the green space south of the Stony Plain Outdoor Pool, are being developed to replace the Meridian Heights sport courts, which were removed as part of the Meridian Heights Reservoir Project. Major construction will be completed by the end of October 2025, with finishing work such as surfacing, fencing, and net installation scheduled for spring 2026. The courts will be ready for play next season.
“The Meridian Heights Reservoir and the courts are both essential infrastructure and important recreational spaces that serve the wellbeing of the greater community,” says Brett Newstead, General Manager of Planning and Infrastructure. “This new location gives us the space to build a new amenity that will serve residents for years to come.”
The new courts are part of Old Town South Redevelopment, which spans the area north of 57 Avenue, south of the Brickyard and 55 Avenue, and west of the PERC Building. This area currently includes the Glenn Hall Centennial Arena, Stony Plain Outdoor Pool and Spray Park, École La Trinité, Westview School, and the highly anticipated Community Recreation Facility.
“Old Town South is at the heart of our community, and these new courts are another step toward realizing the long-term vision for the area,” says Mayor William Choy. “By investing in recreation spaces, we are ensuring Old Town South continues to grow as a hub for culture, sport, and community life.”
