The Town is working to improve conditions and longevity of Town-owned roads through restoration, preservation and rehabilitation.

The 43 Street Road Reconstruction Project will improve underground infrastructure and road conditions along 43 Street.

The project supports the long-term reliability of municipal infrastructure while maintaining an important transportation route within the community. Residents, businesses and motorists travelling through the area may be affected during construction.

Project updates, construction impacts and timelines will be shared through the construction updates section below.

High-Speed Fibre Optic Infrastructure

Ledcor and Fibre Connect is installing high-speed fibre optic infrastructure in areas throughout Stony Plain to expand access to reliable internet and telecommunications services for residents and businesses.

While this is a Ledcor and Fibre Connect led project, the Town is supporting the work through municipal approvals and coordination.

Construction may occur in residential and industrial areas throughout the community and may result in temporary disruptions for nearby residents and businesses.

Locate flags will be placed in required areas prior to construction.

New signs have been designed, welcoming visitors to Stony Plain! More signs will appear over the next few years. The inspiration for the design concept comes from Heritage Park. Its unique attributes include the seal, font, wood posts, exposed metal brackets, and bolts along with stone cladding.

Phase I

Primary welcome signs were installed at the east and west entrances to Stony Plain on Highway 16A in 2018.

Secondary welcome signs have been installed on Secondary Highway 779 at the north and south boundary of Stony Plain as well on the east and west boundary on Secondary Highway 628. Town facility identification signs were installed at the Stony Plain Golf Course and Rotary Park.

Phase II

In 2019, facility identification signs were installed at Heritage Park, the Stony Plain Outdoor Pool and Rotary Spray Park, Public Works, and Rotary Recycling Centre.

Phase III

Early in 2021, the North and South Business Park signs were replaced as well as the Fire Hall. Our downtown also welcomed entrance signs at the south end of 50 Street.

Phase IV

The fourth stage of the Signage Strategy saw four replacement community bulletin boards installed. The boards have been installed at 51 Street and 51 Avenue, Golf Course Road and 44 Avenue, 28 Street and 44 Avenue, and Oatway Drive and Brightbank Avenue.

In addition to the bulletin boards, the Skate Park also received a new facility ID sign in the spring of 2022.

Phase V

In February 2023, two new community bulletin boards were installed as the fifth implementation of the Signage Strategy. One was installed along 45 Street in the Willow Park Natural Area behind St. John Paul II School, the other is along Fairway Drive near the playground. These new boards are looking for sponsorship. If interested, learn more about sponsorship opportunities.

Phase VI

In September 2023, three new community bulletin boards were installed as the sixth implementation of the Signage Strategy. One was installed at Genesis on the Lakes, near the pond and gazebo and was generously sponsored by West Parkland Gas Co-op. The remaining two were placed in Old Town South, near the Glenn Hall Centennial Arena, and in Lake Westerra Estates, situated along Westerra Drive. Sponsorship opportunities are currently open for both of these boards.

The Town of Stony Plain has constructed a new non-denominational municipal cemetery on Rosenthal Road (Range Road 12).

Owned and operated by the Town, the cemetery will serve residents and surrounding communities by providing local burial and cremation options in a respectful and accessible setting.

The project will create space for a range of interment services and support families wishing to honour and remember their loved ones close to home.

The Town of Stony Plain has initiated the planning of a Community Recreation Facility to serve the indoor recreation needs of the region.

The development of a recreation facility was identified as a strategic priority for Council in 2018 and is included as a key strategic priority in the 2026-2029 Strategic Plan
.

Construction of the facility began in Q3 of 2024, and the facility is expected to open in late 2026.

The Meridian Heights Reservoir project is a key initiative identified within the 2026-2028 Corporate Plan to address critical infrastructure repairs to maintain operations.

This reservoir plays an important role for the Town of Stony Plain in delivering reliable water service to residents and businesses.

As part of this project, the Meridian Heights sport courts, including tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, have been removed to accommodate required infrastructure improvements.

New outdoor courts have been constructed in the green space south of the Stony Plain Outdoor Pool, including tennis, pickleball and basketball courts.

These courts have been developed to replace those removed as part of the Meridian Heights Reservoir project.

The Town is undertaking drainage improvement work to enhance stormwater management in key areas. Work is being completed in the following locations:

  • The Brickyard: along the north side of 50 Avenue (west of 52 Street)
  •  Willow Park
