Stony Plain Launches Educational Campaign on Mental Health Among Cultures
Let’s Talk Mental Health! A new campaign is coming to Stony Plain to increase awareness of mental health among cultures and spark community conversations.
From January 19 to 26, the Town of Stony Plain will be sharing informational posts on social media exploring how different cultures understand and address mental health. The online campaign is part of the Stony Plain Inclusion and Diversity action plan working to build a more inclusive and welcoming community through connection and understanding.
“Mental health has been a topic of conversation for several years now and being able to openly talk about and discuss our mental well-being is important to understanding ourselves and others. These conversations can be difficult, especially when we consider how culture can influence the way we understand, respond to, and address mental health,” says Mayor William Choy. “I am looking forward to the week of learning and encourage residents to follow along!”
“All of us have mental health, but how we understand mental wellness and how we approach it varies from person to person. Across cultures, barriers exist that prevent people from seeking help or reaching out to loved ones when they are struggling. Through the Let’s Talk Mental Health campaign, we are hoping to bring awareness to the challenges some community members may face to accessing mental health care and further, explore how we can create a more inclusive and supportive community,” says Community Development Officer Brooklyn Bignell.
Community members can follow along with the campaign on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. An online survey will be available following the campaign for residents to share their thoughts and experiences.
