Three New Magpie Sculptures Unveiled in Stony Plain

Look up high in the sky to find Stony Plain’s newest art installations – three new magpie sculptures have been added to the existing public art project, expanding the collection to a total of six.

The new sculptures, located around town were created by artist David Mcauley. Mcauley uses reclaimed material to create his art, aiming to reduce his environmental footprint while inspiring others to find beauty in overlooked and discarded items. The magpie sculptures are crafted from cutlery and other metal materials, creating a unique look and story for each bird.

Culture and Tourism Development Officer Chantelle Laberge expressed enthusiasm about the project. "We’re very excited to expand our collection since our first three sculptures were unveiled in 2022. This public art project supports our Art in Public Places Strategy. The sculptures are placed around town where you could expect to find real magpies. This creates an interactive art experience and encourages residents and visitors to explore and connect with both the art and our community."

"The new magpie sculptures are hidden throughout town and are ready for you to discover,” says Mayor William Choy. “In your everyday comings and goings, keep an eye out—you might just stumble upon one! This project is an opportunity for all of us to see how art can pop up in the most unexpected places. I encourage everyone to start the search and challenge yourself to find all six sculptures.”"

The new sculptures can be found by the Pioneer Museum, in the Forest Green neighbourhood, and by the Glenn Hall Arena.
