********ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE********

STONY PLAIN, AB: As a result of recent extreme hot weather, the region is experiencing an increase in water demand. As of July 22, 2024, Stony Plain is under Water Demand Management Condition A, which means there are water restrictions on non-essential potable water use for all municipal operations.

The Town of Stony Plain has suspended all non-essential water usage operations until further notice. This includes:

  • Fire hydrant and water main flushing
  • Sewer flushing
  • Irrigation
  • Park watering
  • Street sweeping
  • Firefighting training
  • Fleet vehicle washing (including buses)
  • Other non-essentials water use (non-essential use is defined by all water not used for human consumption)

The Stony Plain Outdoor Pool and Spray Park are not affected by these measures.

There are currently no restrictions on residential or business use; however, residents are encouraged to contribute to conservation efforts. Some ways to limit water usage include:

  • avoiding washing vehicles
  • opting for shorter showers over baths
  • deferring laundry or large uses of water such as filling hot tubs
  • and considering limiting toilet flushing to essential use only

“We encourage everyone to limit non-essential water usage to help reduce our demand on the water supply,” says Paul Simons, Manager of Infrastructure Operations. “Doing this will help prevent us from entering into further water restrictions, which may include mandatory water restrictions.”

The Town will continue to provide updates, including notification of when restrictions are lifted or elevated. Stay informed by:
