New Downtown Banners Celebrate the Spirit of Stony Plain
Downtown has a new look! A new series of banners are being installed along Main Street and the intersections of 50 to 53 Avenue to celebrate the completion of downtown and showcase the spirit of Stony Plain.
The banner designs are the work of local artists Angela Hall and Stephan Garneau who were selected through a public call-for-art in May of 2021. The submission guidelines called for designs that represented the community and captured life in Stony Plain.
“My design features four bear claws with traditional Cree and Métis beaded flowers. The theme of this artwork is to demonstrate the courage, strength, and beauty of the Stony Plain community in this challenging time,” says artist Angela Hall.
“The inspiration for this work was the Town’s proud history of murals, and Christian traditions of stained-glass windows. The famous murals in Stony Plain show important events and people in the community’s history. As an homage to this practice, the imagery in these panels reflect contemporary life in Stony Plain and include symbols that will serve as future points of memory,” says artist Stephan Garneau.
“The artist-designed banners are part of a series of 152 banners installed throughout downtown and are included in Stony Plain’s ongoing Banner Strategy. The strategy aims to create a unified feel throughout the community while simultaneously promoting public art,” says Senior Communications Officer Stephanie Barsby Boisvert
“These new banners are a wonderful addition to our downtown space and truly capture our community spirit. Stony Plain has a long history of celebrating public art and the new banners carry on that tradition while also recognizing the growth our downtown has experienced these past years,” says Mayor William Choy.
The banners will be installed over the coming days. Learn more about public art and the Banner Strategy by visiting the Stony Plain website.
