Revitalization Project Breathes New Life into Local Green Space

Stony Plain is celebrating the revitalization of a popular green space. Town Council came together on the morning of August 30 for the unveiling of a new public art piece and neighbourhood upgrades at the Oatway Drive and Brightbank Avenue green space now officially named ‘Oatway Park’.

The neighbourhood improvement project encompassed the installation of a functional public art piece, a replacement community bulletin board, improvements to drainage in the area, and the reconstruction of asphalt trail. Revitalization work began in the fall of 2021 to improve functionality of the green space guided by the Town’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Action Plan, Signage Implementation Strategy, and Active Transportation Strategy. Trifecta, a combination of poured solid concrete and hand carved concrete rocks by artist Wendy Siebert, is Stony Plain’s first public art bench.

“This area is a highly utilized space in the community. The improvements work to create an even more inviting public space for residents to enjoy while simultaneously addressing issues related to aging infrastructure,” says Mayor William Choy. “If you are in the area and looking for a place to relax, stop by and check out the upgraded space!”

“The bench is based on the need for social distancing during COVID-19 while still inviting you to sit and enjoy the outdoors. Concrete is a great material to help people feel grounded and the solidness of the piece gives you a sense of security,” says artist Wendy Siebert.
