Stony Plain Looks to Spark the Volunteer Spirit in the Community
A new strategy for Stony Plain’s Volunteer Centre is in the works, and the Town is calling on the community to play a key role in its development.
Last year marked the Volunteer Centre’s 25th anniversary. This milestone presented an opportunity to review and refine operations and develop a new strategy for supporting civic engagement and volunteerism in Stony Plain and throughout the Tri-Municipal Region. Civic engagement comes in many forms, from formal volunteering with an organization to shoveling a walkway. A key aspect of the new strategy is participation from residents to create a plan for the community, by the community that recognizes the different ways residents give back to their communities. Responses collected through the online survey will be used to direct the strategy’s development and plan for the future of volunteerism in the region.
“Strong communities are supported by residents who are engaged and invested in the health and well-being of their neighbours. Stony Plain is home to a number of volunteers, programs, and organizations who showcase community spirit time and time again. I am excited to see a new strategy for civic engagement taking form, and to see our residents’ voices at the centre of it,” says Mayor William Choy.
“There are many people in the community who are actively supporting their neighbours and their communities but might not think of themselves as a volunteer. Civic engagement comes in many different forms! The new strategy will be guided by the experiences and perspectives of community members. The survey is a chance to share your thoughts and have a say on the future of community building,” says Volunteer Development Officer Kristy Wilson.
The survey can be accessed on the Stony Plain website until February 5, 2023. A strategy is expected to be presented to Town Council later this spring.
