Road Maintenance

Please provide operators space to maneuver equipment and stay back 15 meters from equipment!

The Town of Stony Plain has a crew to maintain the 171 km roads and 98 km of sidewalks through out the year. Each year, the crew coordinates line painting, street sweeping, ice control, snow removal, thawing catch basins, grading roads, dust control, issuing road permits, and maintaining traffic lights.

Please note that Highways 16A, 779 and 628 are provincial roadways maintained by the Alberta Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors. For inquiries, they can be reached at 403-340-5166 or check out their website at 511 Alberta.

Current Activities

Crews are working on grading back alleys and gravel roads. To report a pot hole notify public works at 780-963-2469.

Sanding trucks maintain slippery road sections regularly during the winter months. Public Works sends out plowing equipment when 5 cm of packed snow builds up on main roadways. Snow removal typically operates from Monday to Friday with weekend operations left to the discretion of the Operations Supervisor.

Currently, the road priority for ice control is:

  1. Arterial roads
  2. School zones
  3. Downtown
  4. Collector roads

To report a concern you may use the link above or call Public Works at 780-963-2469.

Public Works monitors the packed snow depth in residential areas, when the snow pack measures 10 cm deep they will begin Residential Snow Removal. Ensure you remove all vehicles, trailers and driveway ramps from the street. Watch for signs in your community to alert you when crews will be in your area. Wait until crews have removed the signs in your area before moving vehicles back onto the street, crews may need to do a second pass in area that have cul-de-sac or a corner. Snow clearing will not occur on garbage days.

Snow Plowing, Snow Removal, and Ice Control for priorities 1 through 4 are undertaken in accordance with the following standards unless ongoing weather requires continuous focus on priority 1, 2 or 3 roads. More information on the Snow Removal and Ice Control Policy can be found here.

Each snow clearing season, the rotation for residential street snow removal changes with each neighborhood, with the neighborhood at the end of the rotation moves to the top. Example: If your subdivision is #20 this year, next year it will be #1 in the rotation.

Snow or ice build up on sidewalks is your responsibility. You must clear ice and snow from all sidewalks bordering your property (including the sidewalk area on your driveway). Snow must be removed after each snowfall.

If you own a rental property or if you are travelling/working out of Town, you are still responsible for clearing your sidewalks after each snowfall.

  • Clear snow to the bare surface of the sidewalk to prevent extra work after more snow falls.
  • Do not place snow removed from your sidewalk on to the roadway. The snow must be shoveled on to your property. Shoveling snow on to a road can result in drainage issues in the spring and may result in a fine.
  • During extreme temperatures, you may use sand to spread on an icy sidewalk bordering your property.
  • Free sand is located in the box outside the fence at Public Works yard 4505-50 Ave. Please bring your own container.

If you do not clear your sidewalks, a Peace Officer may issue an order requiring you to remove the snow and ice (including the sidewalk area on your driveway) within seven days.

Once an order has been issued, you will not receive extra warnings. You must keep your sidewalks clear of snow and ice or a contractor may be hired to remove snow and ice as necessary. Costs will be added to your property taxes. Additional fines may also be issued.

Failure to remove snow and ice from your sidewalk can result in a:

  • $250 fine for a first offence
  • $500 fine for a second offence, in the same year
  • $750 fine for a third offence, or subsequent offences, in the same year

When an emergency occurs, fire crews rely on having access to fire hydrants to respond as quickly as possible. Every second counts – snow build up around the hydrant can result in delays to an emergency response.

Do your part in keeping your community safe by:

  • Removing any snow or ice from hydrants
  • Clearing a one-meter perimeter around hydrants
  • Clearing a path to hydrants from the sidewalk or street
  • Avoiding piling snow on or around hydrants and ensuring they are visible at all times

  • Crews will be on the roads by 6 am, please watch for signs in your area to ensure you have vehicles off the road.
  • Signs will be out the night before, to indicate which area they will be in.
  • Ensure vehicles are removed from the road by 6 am and remain off the road until the windrows have been removed.
  • Remove driveway ramps - driveway ramps can get caught in the snow blower and take a piece of equipment down for several hours delaying clearing efforts.
  • Crews do their best to remove the snow and ice down to the pavement, but this may not always be possible due to conditions.
  • Unfortunately, chunks of ice and snow may come on to the sidewalk, this can not be avoided, please clear your sidewalks after the equipment has been through the area.

Note: Schedule may change due to changes in conditions and waste collection schedules.
