Speed Limit Reduction

SLOWER SPEEDS. SAFER STREETS.

Starting July 25, 2026, residential speed limits in Stony Plain will be reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.

This community-wide change is intended to improve road safety, reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions and help make neighbourhood streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and all road users.

The new 40 km/h speed limit applies to all local and collector roads in residential areas, except Glory Hill Road, from Highway 16A to the south cul-de-sac.

Provincial highways, arterial roads, school zones and playground zones remain unchanged.

The Town of Stony Plain is committed to enhancing road safety and supporting livable neighbourhoods for all residents.

The speed limit reduction is intended to improve road safety, reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions and help make neighbourhood streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and all road users.

Lower residential speeds help by:

  • Reducing collision severity and stopping distance
  • Giving drivers more time to react
  • Improving safety for people walking, biking and travelling to school
  • Supporting calmer residential streets by helping reduce traffic noise
  • Aligning with road safety approaches adopted by many municipalities across Alberta and Canada

On April 27, 2026, Town Council approved a reduction in posted speed limits from 50 km/h to 40 km/h on all local roads and most collector roads within residential areas.

The decision followed a 2025 speed study of local and collector roads in Stony Plain, which identified opportunities to improve road safety and support more consistent operating speeds in residential areas.

Existing residential speed limit signs will be updated to reflect the new 40 km/h limit.

Drivers are expected to follow posted speeds as signage is updated.

Travel times on residential roads are expected to be minimally impacted.

The focus is on improving safety and encouraging voluntary compliance with posted speed limits.

The Town will continue to share information to help motorists understand where the 40 km/h residential speed limit applies and how the change supports safer neighbourhood streets.

Drivers are expected to follow posted speed limits. Enforcement may occur where needed to support road safety and compliance.
