Recycling Changes in Effect October 1, 2026
Extended Producer Responsibility
The Government of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program is currently in effect. This program shifts financial responsibility for recycling programs from municipalities and residents to packaging and paper producers.
As of October 1, more items are accepted in your blue bag recycling! These items include:
- Glass containers
- Foam packaging like meat trays and take out containers
- Flexible plastic packaging like chip bags, bubble wrap, and pet food bags
- Aerosol containers

The Eco Centre is a drop-off facility where residents can dispose of items that can’t be placed in their black waste cart, blue recycling bag or green organics cart. Household hazardous waste, electronics, appliances and extra garbage are also accepted at the Eco Centre.

What is the Extended Producer Responsibility Program (EPR)?
EPR is a provincial program that shifts financial responsibility for recycling programs to paper and packaging producers. This means that municipalities and taxpayers no longer pay for recycling. The Town of Stony Plain has joined the program as an Opt-In community, meaning that recycling continues to be collected by GFL Environmental, our collection partner.
Can I recycle my to-go coffee cups in my blue bag?
As of October 1, 2026, to-go cups are accepted in blue bags!
Can I recycle glass in my blue bag?
As of October 1, 2026, Glass is accepted in blue bags!
How can I wash my recycling and save water?
- Tin cans, aluminum cans, pie plates and containers can all be washed using sink water from washing dishes. This will ensure no additional water is used
- To ensure acceptable items reach end markets and are, in fact, turned in to new products, it is important to ensure that they are clean. This means that materials should be free of food chunks, liquid materials, or wiped clean from grease and dirt
If plastic has a recycle symbol on it, is it always recyclable?
As of October 1, 2026, most single-use plastic materials are accepted in your blue bag. Plastics intended for long-term use, such as reusable water bottles, Tupperware, and kids' toys are not accepted. Any plastics used to hold hazardous or restricted materials are not accepted.
