The Stony Plain Volunteer Centre provides support and services to the volunteers and organizations within Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County. The Centre continues to be an active presence in the community and grows to serve volunteering and community needs.

How to Get Started

There are so many ways to volunteer in the community. Opportunities are flexible, inclusive and meaningful for all ages that can fit any schedule.

Volunteer Connections Mini Course: Learn how volunteering can help you connect with others and become happier and healthier by getting involved in your community.

Community Service Options: volunteers that have mandated community service hours to fulfil are encouraged to click on the volunteer opportunities and see what is of interest and connect directly with the organization. Alternative volunteer opportunities available with Just Serve and can include some virtual options (note of caution, for mandated hours, they must be served in Canada).

National Volunteer Week

Each April, National Volunteer Week is celebrated across Canada—a time to recognize and thank the volunteers who give their time, energy, and passion to make our communities stronger, more connected, and more vibrant.

This year, the Town of Stony Plain invites you to take part in thanking our community’s volunteers for National Volunteer Week from April 18-24, 2027

Opportunity Spotlight

Grow Your Leadership. Strengthen Community. Make an Impact.

Are you passionate about Stony Plain and ready to make a lasting impact? Inspired to Lead Stony Plain is a dynamic, 3-month leadership experience designed to empower emerging local leaders, build meaningful community connections, and ignite grassroots change.
The program guides participants through three themes—Lead from Within, Lead with Others, and Lead for Impact—while helping you design your own community project and grow as a Neighbourhood Connector.

Learn, Connect, and Building Leaders Who Build Community
Participants will explore authentic leadership, strengthen their personal leadership identity, and gain tools to create positive change in their neighbourhoods and across the community.

Hands-On Learning & Connection
• Weekly virtual learning sessions (20–45 minutes). Access to computer is essential.
• Monthly in-person gatherings (one half day in person session a month)
• Opportunities to collaborate with local changemakers
• Support to design and launch your own community project
• Recognition as a Neighbourhood Connector

Benefits to Participants
• Design a personalized community project aligned with your passions, experience, and goals.
• Apply new skills and insights through real-world community engagement.
• Strengthen leadership practices that support long-term personal and community impact.
• Earn a Certificate of Completion from the Town of Stony Plain.

Participant Commitment
To ensure a meaningful and impactful experience, participants are asked to commit to:
• 3 months of learning and engagement
• Weekly virtual sessions (20–45 minutes). Access to computer is essential.
• Monthly in-person gatherings (one half day in person session a month)
o Oct 3, 9am - 11:30am
o Nov 7, 9am - 12pm
o Dec 5, 9am - 12pm
o Jan 9, 9am - 12pm
• Active participation in the design and implementation of a community project
Selected participants will be chosen by a review committee to ensure a diverse group of emerging leaders who are dedicated to strengthening their understanding of the community and expanding their positive impact.

Volunteering Mission

Community and Social Development is excited to share the What We Heard Report. This is a summary of volunteerism and civic engagement from winter 2023.

Stony Plain Council accepted the Volunteerism and Civic Engagement Strategy for information. This strategy is aimed at promoting wellbeing and healthy communities in Stony Plain by providing a framework for enhancing volunteerism and civic engagement. This strategy emphasizes community development and will be monitored over the next five years of implementation, ensuring it will build upon the legacy of the Volunteer Centre established in 1997. This strategy reflects a commitment to support civic engagement and volunteerism in the community for years to come, as outlined in the 2024-2026 Corporate Plan and 2024-2027 Strategic Plan

The Tri-Municipal Region Community Development Planning Committee—bringing together partners from Stony Plain, Parkland County, and Spruce Grove—supports and connects local nonprofit and charitable organizations through leadership development, training, networking, and volunteer engagement. Through ongoing opportunities focused on sustainability, governance, and collaboration, the Committee fosters shared learning and sector-wide growth.
