Each year, the Town of Shikaoi sends a class of grade 9 students to visit Stony Plain. Students are paired and hosted by local families and enjoy participating in family outings, cultural traditions, and everyday Canadian activities.

To be a host family, you need to have an open heart and mind and one spare bedroom for two students. Host families do not need to know Japanese or have any previous hosting experience. All Tri-Region residents are encouraged to apply.

The 2025 Shikaoi Student Delegation will visit Stony Plain from October 4 to October 14.

FAQ

Do I need to speak Japanese to be a host family?
While knowing Japanese is a plus, it's not a requirement! Communication can be facilitated through translation apps on cell phones, gestures, and body language.
How many students will I host, and how much space do they need?
Each host family will welcome two students into their homes. They are usually comfortable sharing a bedroom, so only a small amount of space is needed.
How long are the students in Stony Plain?
The Delegation visits Stony Plain for 10 days. In 2025, the students will be in Town from October 4 to 14.
What do the students do during the day?
On weekdays, the Town of Stony Plain arranges activities for the visiting students. As a host family, you won’t need to take time off work to accommodate them during the day.
 Who can apply?
Applications are open to Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, and Parkland County residents. To learn more and to apply, complete the Host Family Application Package above.
